For Shopify Plus merchants, MNML Volume Pricing supports an alternative pricing method that updates the line item price directly at checkout, rather than applying a discount.
With the price update mode:
Volume pricing is applied by changing the line item price directly at checkout, rather than using a discount line.
This bypasses many of Shopify’s discount combination restrictions, including cases where discount lines cannot stack or be used with certain promotion types (for example Buy X Get Y).
From the customer’s perspective, they simply see a lower price rather than a discount entry.
This approach treats volume pricing as a true price adjustment rather than a promotional discount.
Using price-based volume pricing allows you to:
Use Buy X Get Y promotions alongside volume pricing
Combine volume pricing with other Shopify discount types
Avoid discount stacking limitations
Present cleaner pricing (no visible discount line)
Treat volume pricing as “true pricing”, not a promotion
This is especially useful for:
Wholesale or B2B stores
Complex promotion setups
Stores using Buy X Get Y as a core strategy
Volume tiers are still defined the same way
When a tier is met, the item price is updated directly
Shopify sees the item as having a lower base price
Other discounts can now apply normally
No changes are required to your product prices or catalogue.
Enable price-based volume pricing if:
You rely on Buy X Get Y promotions
You want volume pricing to behave like standard pricing
You’ve hit Shopify discount combination limits
You want maximum flexibility with promotions
If you’re only using simple volume discounts, the standard discount-based method is usually sufficient.
If your store is eligible for Price Transforms / cart price updates, an additional pricing option will appear in the Volume Pricing Settings screen.
Open the MNML Volume Pricing app
Go to Settings → Volume Pricing Settings
Find Pricing Mode
Select one of the available options:
Discount-based pricing (default)
Direct price update (Shopify Plus only)
Click Save
If your store is not eligible for price updates, this option will not be shown.
Instead of showing a discount title in the cart or checkout, you can optionally change the product title when volume pricing applies.
This is especially useful when using price update mode, where no discount line is shown.
When a volume pricing tier is applied, the product title can be updated to include a custom suffix or message.
Examples:
T-Shirt – Bulk Pricing
T-Shirt – Save 20%
T-Shirt – Trade Price
This text appears wherever the product title is shown:
Cart
Checkout
Order confirmation
Shopify Admin
You can use dynamic placeholders in the title:
{{product_title}} – original product name
{{quantity}} – tier quantity reached
{{tier_price}} – discounted unit price
{{percentage_off}} – discount percentage
This lets you clearly communicate the pricing benefit without relying on discount labels.
Even with price update mode, there are platform-level behaviours to be aware of:
Shopify’s discount combination rules still apply to discounts outside price updates. For details see Shopify’s guide:
https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-combinations
Price update behaviour does not change reporting semantics in Shopify Admin; some analytics may still show original pricing before adjustments in certain views.
Some edge cases in legacy bundling and combined discount logic that were possible with Shopify Scripts may still not be fully achievable via Functions at this time.
Because this feature touches core checkout behaviour, always test thoroughly - particularly with other promotions like automatic discounts, discount codes, and Buy X Get Y setups.
